Great Silence, Canyonlands - Utah
Here, in the remote "Maze District" of Canyonlands National Park, you may not encounter any other travelers. The access road is barely more than a professional jeep trail, there are only infrequent, hidden sources of water, and the topography of the canyons (as the word 'maze' implies) forms a labyrinth of dead ends. Here, in this picture, the white sandstone in the middle successfully camouflages at least two deep canyons and all their side canyons. From the rim, the desert appears flat. But from the air, it appears as if a fern had been stomped into the earth by a giant.
I sat here in complete silence for over thirty minutes. It was awe inspiring - such a vast expanse of quiet. No sounds at all. No jets, no cars, no people, no animals, not a whisper of wind - only the weight of silence around my head. It was almost as if you were THE only person in the world.
