  • Dawn of Winter, Jackson - Wyoming

The morning light brings both color and heat to the summit pinnacles of the Grand Teton and its family of jagged granite spires. Here, in January, at just 4 degrees above zero, the air was crisp and clear; moose strolled the sagebrush dotted plaines, and back-country skiers left their marks along the slopes of the 'Grand'.

  • Leprechaun Alley, Redwoods - California

The brilliant green shamrock ground cover leads you along, always looking to your feet for the magical fourth leaf. Tiny faint game trails criss-cross the mostly untraveled heart of the Redwood Forests of Northern California.

  • Little House on the Prairie, Swan Valley - Idaho

A desolate empty home stands alone along the wintery plains of Swan Valley, along the fertile eastern edge of Idaho. I know nothing of this house, and its many families, but my imagination fills its walls with many tales.

  • Stout Grove, Redwoods - California

The Stout Grove, off the beaten track and within the Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park, sits majestically along a small floodplain at the junction of two rivers. The Stout Grove has a spacious, hushed, cathedral-like quality - and when the early spring light filters through the mist from the river, it becomes a quiet magical place.

  • Pulse, Kona Coast - Hawaii

The Pacific Ocean washes up onto the black lava stones of Kona, just before dawn. The waves are like a heartbeat - regular, visceral, seemingly never ending. It is the heartbeat of the earth.

  • Frosty Trees, Swan Valley - Idaho

The morning frost created these magical white brushes out of trees. By noon, the frost was gone, and the trees once again stood stark and black against the white hills.

  • The Grand Teton - Wyoming

During the heart of winter, the Tetons wear a heavy white coat - hiding the boulders and scree, reflecting the sky, and holding the weight of springtime water for the wildflowers of summer and the hibernating animals of spring.

  • Gray Glacier, Patagonia - Chile

Summertime in Patagonia is still a harsh, nearly arctic, environment. Flowers must thrive and bloom quickly in the few warm hours of the day.

  • Monument Creek, Grand Canyon - Arizona

A small cluster of barrel cactus, in pre-bloom, clings to a rocky pillar overlooking the dry drainage of Monument Creek. This creek is one of many that divides the Tonto Plateau, and the 100-mile Tonto Trail, into hikable sections.

  • Ancient Art, Volcanos National Park - Hawaii

The petroglyphs at Puu Loa were created centuries ago - abstract designs, human figures, and thousands of carved round pockets (or cupules) that were used as receptacles for umbilical cords. Placing a baby's umbilical cord inside a cupule and covering it with stones was meant to bestow health and longevity to the child.
