Sunset from Mt. Rainier - Washington An ill-fated attempt on a seldom-climbed route on Mt. Rainier resulted in whiteout, a foot of fresh snow, and a terrible search for the route down off the mountain and across the glacier. This image was taken at sunset, just before the storm began its nigh-long attempt to tear our tiny tent off the side of the mountain.
Steptoe Butte - Washington Cotton-white spring clouds skim the rolling green and gold wheat fields of the Palouse Valley, Washington. Steptoe Butte (where this picture was taken) is a 3,612-foot-tall, thimble-shaped quartzite butte, with a corkscrew road to its summit.
Sunrise over Bright Angel Canyon, Grand Canyon - Arizona A cluster of deep green trees hides the Phantom Ranch, at the very bottom of the Kaibab Trail on the north side of the Colorado River. This image was taken on the hike back up to the south rim, a 5,000 foot grind of switchbacks and traverses.
