  • Mayan Ruins, Tulum - Mexico

Tulum is an expansive pre-Columbian Maya site, one of the best-preserved, along the southern coast of the Yucatan Penninsula. Some of the structures there have been dated to 1600 AD. Tradescantia spathacea (the green and purple plant) dominates the foliage that creeps between the rubble of the limestone ruins. The striking plant in the background is Purple Heart.

  • El Castillo, Tulum - Mexico

Tulum, the because it faces the sunrise, is known as the "City of Dawn". El Castillo stands on a bluff facing east towards the Caribbean, and has been dated back to 1600AD. A thriving trade port for both land and sea routes, it was abandoned completely by the end of the 16th century due to Old World diseases brought by Spanish settlers.
