Wilderness, Sawtooth Mountains - Idaho
The Sawtooth National Wilderness Area has been my local mountain range for all of my life. There is probably enough of my blood in the rocks for it to be a relative. Years of climbing, backpacking, trail running, hiking, and exploring - and I still discover magical new lakes and cirques. This is Kathryn Lake, hardly an unknown, but just difficult enough to approach that only a handful of backpackers reach its rocky shores each year. I love these high alpine lakes; no real flat ground, solid rock scored and polished by ancient glaciers, tiny wildflowers springing up in desperation wherever they can, cold lakes with small fish, sudden storms, scree fields the size of a city block, wise old trees dreaming of winter avalanches, big open skies - and pink and grey granite as far as you can see.
