  • Pastel Prayer

    Pastel Prayer

This tiny pink church sits at the foot of the Swiss Alps, in the village of Trient. It was quite a surprise to discover this pastel antiquity at the end of a very long day of hiking through the mountains.

  • Val di Funes

    Val di Funes

The tiny hidden valley of Val di Funes in northern Italy. The spire of St. Magdalena church mocks the shape of the nearby Dolomites, and in the foreground, a small gang of sheep plot their next move.

  • Landscape of Stone

    Landscape of Stone

Pre-dawn color and a nice cloud halo over Pelmo and Pelmetto, in the Italian Dolomites. This image was taken from Rifugio Lagazuoi, and in the distance, almost dead-center, you can see the next days goal - the Nuvolau hut - perched on the very edge of a cliff.

  • Window Into Time

    Window Into Time

In the small north Italian village of Dobbiaco, an ancient structure is pierced with a window. In front of this window has passed hundreds of years of events and lives, rain and sunshine, children running, old men shuffling, solders marching, women twirling in summer dresses.

  • The Matterhorn

Sunrise on one of the most iconic peaks in all of the Alps. Zermatt, Switzerland

  • Ibex

    Ibex

Suddenly, while setting up my camera for a sunset picture, this beautiful Ibex just walked up behind me, begging to have his picture taken before galloping down a cliff face. Switzerland

  • A Small Prayer

  • Alpe di Siusi

    Alpe di Siusi

Alpe di Siusi in the South Tyrol region of Italy. The highest alpine meadow in Europe. A little hike by headlamp brings you to this place just before dawn.

  • The Dolomites

    The Dolomites

Sunrise from the Lagazuoi hut. The Dolomites are included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site protection plan. The quantity and concentration of peaks and spires, with superbly exposed geology, provides an insight into the recovery of marine life in the Triassic period, after the greatest extinction event recorded in the history of life on Earth.

  • Keeping the Lights On.

    Keeping the Lights On.

On the crest of a limestone cliff, near the very center of this image, is the Nuvolau refugio. And if examined closely, you can see that the lights are on in the hut, that it's cozy and warm, people are finishing their breakfast and getting packed for the days hike or via ferrata route. This is one of our favorite huts along the Alta Via 1 trail system.

  • The Cosmiques Arête

The Cosmiques Ridge is a supurb varied climbing route to the summit of the Aiguille du Midi. Mont Blanc, France

  • The Marmolada, Italy

    The Marmolada, Italy

Photography can be challenging in the Dolomites. Suddenly it's snowing and the gear is freezing up, then it's a blue bird day and the light is too harsh. But, in between those extremes...

  • Private Balconies

    Private Balconies

A strong telephoto lens reduces the depth of the seaside town of Manarola to just a flat wall of apartments. This town is one of the most charming and romantic of the Cinque Terre villages.

  • The Painted Sheild

    The Painted Sheild

This door, ancient and as heavy as the tree it was hewn from, has felt its share of paint over the centuries. Northern Italy

  • Labrynth

    Labrynth

In Manarola, one the the five fishing towns within the Cinque Terra region of Italy, you have to make choices all of the time. Often times luck, and a good memory, helps you find your way.

  • Watch Your Step

    Watch Your Step

Hiking Italy's Alta Via 1 requires, at times, a fair bit of attention to ones feet, as the paths, like this one, are often steep and narrow. Italian Dolomites
