Pastel Prayer

This tiny pink church sits at the foot of the Swiss Alps, in the village of Trient. It was quite a surprise to discover this pastel antiquity at the end of a very long day of hiking through the mountains.

Val di Funes

The tiny hidden valley of Val di Funes in northern Italy. The spire of St. Magdalena church mocks the shape of the nearby Dolomites, and in the foreground, a small gang of sheep plot their next move.

Pre-dawn color and a nice cloud halo over Pelmo and Pelmetto, in the Italian Dolomites. This image was taken from Rifugio Lagazuoi, and in the distance, almost dead-center, you can see the next days goal - the Nuvolau hut - perched on the very edge of a cliff.

Window Into Time

The Dolomites

The quantity and concentration of peaks and spires, with superbly exposed geology, provides an insight into the recovery of marine life in the Triassic period, after the greatest extinction event recorded in the history of life on Earth.

Keeping the Lights On.

On the crest of a limestone cliff, near the very center of this image, is the Nuvolau refugio. And if examined closely, you can see that the lights are on in the hut, that it's cozy and warm, people are finishing their breakfast and getting packed for the days hike or via ferrata route. This is one of our favorite huts along the Alta Via 1 trail system.
